Things to do in Cork:

For the visitor to Cork for the first time …. Welcome to the ‘Real’ capital of Ireland! Cork is the largest county in Ireland with a very proud sporting history. Also known as the ‘Rebel County’, Cork has had, and continues to have, a rich tradition in producing successful athletes at local, national and international levels.

Cork city was originally built on a marsh with two channels of the same river creating a trading island. Similar to famous cities such as Rome and San Francisco, it is built between seven hills. The harbour in Cork is the second largest natural harbour in the world. Historically, this harbour was a major factor in developing trade within the city. This harbour is the reason why Cobh developed into a major trading town. The harbour still boasts many naval features such as Camden Fort in Crosshaven or Blackrock Castle which acted as protectors to the city.

So what can you do in Cork city if you don’t have much of a budget? The answer to this is quite a loat actually! The list below is just a simple guide if you have time to kill and would not like to travel too far…. Assuming you are based near the city centre.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Worth a look:
  1. English Market – Located between Princes Street and the Grand Parade. Historically an internal market with all sorts of items for sale. (So good that royalty regularly visits there!)

  2. Patrick Street – One of the few curved main streets in any major city …. The reason for the curve??? …. believe it or not but this streest was originally a river channel and was filled in many years ago. (Check out the steps at the front of the ‘Le Chateau’ bar …. Used by mooring boats so that passengers could disembark as the tide went up and down.)

  3. Oliver Plunkett Street – A pedestrian friendly street with all makes of shops and services to give you a real taste of Cork.

  4. St Finbarre’s Cathedral – A beautiful Church of Ireland cathedral just a few minutes walk from the city centre.

  5. UCC – Walk the grounds of the largest third level educational institute in Cork. Check out the Aula Maxima, the Quad and beyond.

  6. Fitzgerald Park. Cork city’s public gardens on the banks of the river Lee. It is very busy for all the right reasons during the good weather.

  7. Crawford Art Gallery: While art may not be for everyone, the gallery will give you an insight to some beautiful pieces of work. (Some created locally)

  8. Shandon Church. An icon of Cork’s skyline. This old church with it’s four clocks (known as the four-faced liar) is a unique part of Cork’s history.

  9. Butter Exchange – A short journey from Shandon, this is worth a visit.

  10. Top of Patrick’s Hill. The walk to the top of this hill is not recommended if you are unfit. This is a steep hill overlooking the hear of the city …. But you will understand the reason for the recommendation once you get to the top. Travel over the crest of the hill and take a break at the public garden overlooking the North-Wet of the city and you will be on the location of where some of the iconic scenes of the TV series, the Young Offenders were shot.
